All eyes are on the National Mall Tuesday as Barak Obama takes office as our 44th president. Millions in town to witness the event -- packed in close from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial -- will obscure the condition of what's often called "America's Front Yard," which last had a facelift about 100 years ago.
Read this excellent article in the Los Angeles Times about the current state of the Mall and initiatives to update it for the 21st century.
And ... this just in ... The Presidential Inaugural Committee just released a statement from President-elect Obama saying he "believes the National Mall belongs to every American and that each of us can play a role in helping restore and preserve it for future generations."
During the inaugural events, a public service announcement about Mall restoration will be broadcast on the huge jumbo-trons placed along the Mall. The announcement features clips from JFK's inaugural address, Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech and images of the current state of the landscape. It also urges citizens to contribute to the Trust for the National Mall, which is raising funds to repair the site.

after watching this on tv (bbc, sky, cnn) i was really impressed with your new leader, clearly articulate, educated, and with strong leadership qualities. finally, perhaps the US will lead the world again (in the correct direction).
