Roberto Burle Marx: Tablecloth
Jan 26-March 4, 2012
An exhibition at The Rooster Gallery in New York City is featuring several late works by the celebrated Brazilian 20th century landscape architect and artist Roberto Burle Marx. The exhibition is named after a painted tablecloth designed to fit the table of one of Burle Marx's closest friends, art dealer and collector José Ramoa.
Also on display are 12 india-ink works on paper dating from 1973 to 1990 and letters and photography of Burle Marx and Ramoa.
Burle Marx, who died in 1994, was a prolific artist as well as a landscape designer. Lauro Cavalcanti, curator of a major Burle Marx Exhibition, noted that he "painted every day in the morning and in the afternoon he did his gardens ... and did not enjoy the fact that his paintings were relegated to a secondary position."
The Rooster Gallery says the exhibition will show Burle Marx's activity not only as a landscape architect but also as a prolific and inventive artist.
