Plants, plants, plants. According to the Garden Media Group's annual garden trends report, today's homeowners are tapping into the "benefits of plants," which they find to be a "necessity" in their lives.
GMG quotes Dr. Charlie Hall of Texas A & M, who says "Gen Y's are embracing a connection with plants based on economics, environmental impact, health and wellness."
While gardeners are planting wherever they can, they are blurring the differences between indoors and outdoors. This lovely fireplace and outdoor seating area surrounded by plants was designed by Botanical Decorators of Olney, MD.
According to GMG's report, people are also joining CSA's and shopping at local farmers markets, focusing on ecologically-sound landscaping, such as water-wise gardens, and planting flowers and shrubs of every color imaginable.
Gardeners are also going high tech and digital, using smart phone apps for gardening, and reading free gardening e-zines. One of my new favorites is Leaf.

Love that fireplace design. Definitely think shrubs will be big this year, they take up space and are easy. DIY gardens and growing plants that produce food beyond fruits and veggies seems to be a big thing this year too.
