The latest survey of garden trends from ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) finds that homeowners are opting for essential items like seating and dining areas; grills and firepits; benches and seatwalls; or furniture that can withstand the outdoor elements. The survey reported less enthusiasm for accoutrements like outdoor stereo systems, outdoor heaters, tennis courts, outdoor showers, gazebos or pavilions. According to ASLA CEO Nancy Somerville, "Homeowners want to create a sense of place for their family, friends and neighbors to enjoy outside, but an uncertain economy means many will dial back some of the extra features we've seen in past years."
As for garden elements alone, 94 percent of respondents said they wanted low-maintenance gardens. Other popular garden elements included water-efficient irrigation systems, native and/or drought-tolerant plants; less lawn; fountains or water features; and vegetable gardens.
