There's no better place than a public garden for instant lessons in planting design. Joshua Siskin details how you can learn about basic design principles like repetition and successful planting combinations from a trip to the Getty or to Descanso Gardens. Wish I were in California at this time of year, but I've taken lots of photos of great containers at the Smithsonian here in DC and at the Scott Arboretum in Swarthmore, PA. I get them out whenever I'm looking for new inspiration on combos for color and texture.
Garden design is so hard. Planning everything out beforehand is often very hard.
