A number of new gardens will be showcased for the first time on The Garden Conservancy's Open Days tours in Oregon and Illinois, July 8th, 9th, and 23rd. The garden at left, in Eugene, Oregon, was crafted by the owners of a garden design and construction firm, and it's been featured in several magazines, including Garden Design and Sunset. It is an eclectic design, with fastigiate and dwarf conifers, a corrugated metal fence, stone borders and retaining walls, and much more. Other Eugene gardens include a tiny cottage garden that complements an ivy-covered brick house; a farm house surrounded by many garden "rooms," complete with a hidden reflecting pool, gazebo, trellises and arbors covered with roses and clematis. Two other new gardens are on display the same weekend in Washington County.

In Lake Forest,
this three acre garden will be on display. It dates back to the 1920's, and but it's been renovated over the past several years. The current owners uncovered, added, and reinterpreted what was already there to make the garden come together. A stone capital from St. Basil's Cathedral in Chicago stands at one end of a long vista that stretches out in front of the visitor. There's a formal vegetable garden, a stone fountain, a terraced garden, and a woodland retreat. You'll encounter ancient arborvitae hedges, a very old burr oak, many annual flowers, and stonework that's been around since the beginning. Sounds like a must-see.
Other new gardens will be on display in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New York. For complete info, see the Garden Conservancy web site www.gardenconservancy.org
