A couple of weeks ago, I walked by this residence on my way to a place down the block that was on the garden tour. However, I was struck by the charming little streetside view of this entry to the garden along the side of the house.
The eye, of course, falls on the armillary in the center of the circle and the path that beckons to the rest of the garden.
The design is so successful that you don't even notice ... until you take a second, harder look, that it hides the air conditioning condensers and also the basement entry behind the stone wall.
A lot of designers would have settled for a wood construction of some kind -- fencing or lattice -- to hide the ugly elements, but this is a testament to the designer's skills ... and an intent to make something unattractive into a little garden room with far greater appeal.
In Edgartown, MA.
Hi Jane,
I know the garden. It's on South Summer Street. I hope you enjoyed the Garden Open Day. Doro Chaffee and I were co-organizers. Did you come by my garden at 16 School Street? Judith Tankard
