Why is it that more homeowners can't see what a simple bench in the right place can do for a garden. I loved this eye-appealing "garden" just outside the side entrance to a house in Woods Hole, MA. You might not even notice the garden, were it not for the bench that arrests the view and invites you to sit down and enjoy it.
And wow ... this bench makes you stop and take note of the very nice stonework, the view beyond, and if you take a seat, you have a great view of a very generous lawn and a sizeable house.
This bench is secluded by tall shrubbery behind it ... kind of a secret garden space where one might sit alone and read, or simple rest and take in the view of the perennials and flowering shrubs. A nice, simple stopping place below the house.
I'm not sure the owners of this Martha's Vineyard garden was meant for people to sit anywhere except on the chairs, but the low seat wall is a perfect place for overflow seating when you're having a cocktail party or more people than normal for dinner.
Likewise, this wall in front of a shade garden that cascades down a gentle slope would easily accommodate party guests with refreshments in hand. The main patio off the back of the house is just out of view at the upper end of the photo.
