I am not a fan of sedum, but maybe that's because nobody ever plants enough of them together. Even in my own yard, where there are quite a few, they look quite puny most of the time. Last Saturday, I went out for a visit to the National Arboretum in DC and was simply blown away by the sight above. Yes, it is an Oehme VanSweden creation (the design, that is), and you couldn't find a more spectacular autumn combination.
The trick is, of course, to plant very, very many instead of what you might think is many.

The grasses were just as beautiful, as they always are in the fall, but these looked particularly gorgeous (note the reddish color in the stems) close by the red color of the sedums.
But if you don't have room for that many plants, there's always a case to be made for just one, if it's the right one. And this pink muhly grass is the right one for this spot. It's a breath-taking sight when it's at its full peak in October.
