Asa Gray is considered as the greatest American botanist of the 19th century. He founded the Harvard Herbarium, and corresponded for more than 30 years with Charles Darwin.
To mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, the Harvard Museum of Natural History is offering a series of special lectures and programs. All events take place at the museum.
Oct 21, 6PM: One Act Play by the English theater group, Menagerie. Dramatization of the 30 years of correspondence between Gray and Darwin.
Nov 4, 6PM. William (Ned) Friedman, new director of the Arnold Arboretum, discusses the Search for the First Flowering Plants.
Nov 18 6PM, Harvard Herbarium curator Charles Davis tracks 160 years of climate change at Thoreau's Walden Pond, including the decline of many native wildflowers and the upswing in non-native and invasive species.
