The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has announced the winners of its 2012 Professional and Student Awards. Here are some of the winners in the residential design category.
The top Award of Excellence went to Andrea Cochran for the Drs. Julian and Raye Richardson Apartments in San Francisco, a home for formerly homeless adults. The courtyard, shown here, offers residents a place to get together or to sit quietly alone. Benches and seats were made from reclaimed wood and the plantings create the feeling of an urban oasis.
The project also includes this roof garden and a streetscape with rain gardens and permeable pavers that reduce site runoff and allow for groundwater recharge.
Quaker Smith Point Residence
H. Keith Wagner Partnership
This home is one of several private residences on the site of Shelburne Farms in Vermont, originally built as a model agricultural estate with the help of Frederick Law Olmsted. Wagner designed a new master plan for the residence, integrating the residential site with the existing Farms, views to the mountains and Lake Champlain.
In
keeping with the historic nature of the site, local materials were used
when possible, although Corten steel was introduced, as it is
reminiscent of agricultural implements used in the past.
An expansive field below the house is now an experiment in meadow restoration: test plots have been planted to see which grasses and wildflowers are best suited to the site.
Maple Hill Residence
Stephen Stimson Associates
The design of this suburban Boston farmstead closely parallels the existing linear topography and emphasizes the strong ridgeline across one side of the property. Site elements were carefully planned to include spaces for exploration and enjoyment of the natural environment.
Aside from a dining terrace and kitchen garden near the house, there are also meadows, woodlands, a small pond, a swimming pool, vegetable garden, and a water garden that filters runoff from the house and parking area.
New Century Garden
Steve Martino & Associates
This Palm Springs garden is designed as a new century experience with contemporary materials, technologies and attitudes: bold colors and sculptural plant forms reflect the desert environment and reinforce the garden's main themes of light and water.
There's a strong indoor-outdoor connection in this garden, including views of the San Jacinto mountains that loom in the background. The garden is now a showcase for desert plants, and it includes pool, tennis courts, and spacious entertaining areas.
Other U.S. residential winners are Reed Hilderbrand LLC for Reordering Old Quarry in Guilford, CT and Bionic for Urban Spring in San Francisco.
