Some great new plants this coming year from Monrovia
Plum Passion® Hydrangea
Hydrangea aspera 'Plum Passion'
A new purple-leafed hydrangea that should be a standout in any garden, that is if you're in zones 7-10. The foliage is dark purple on the upper side of the leaf, rosy purple on the underside. Lacecap flowers; grows at a moderate rate, reaching five to six feet tall and a bit wider. It takes full to part shade. Imagine it next to any plant with golden leaves. Collected by Dan Hinkley.
Feelin' Sunny™ Deodar Cedar
Cedrus deodara 'MonKinn'
Wow -- a groundcover golden-needled deodar! It has an irregular growth habit, spreading to six feet wide at a height of about two feet. It can be grown in a container as well, and will train into an upright form. Part to full sun, zones 7-9. A fabulous plant against darker evergreens.
Huber's Tawny Gold Spreading Yew
Taxus x media 'Huber's Tawny Gold'
A nice, slow growing yew with golden needles, three to four feet high and four to six feet wide. It takes sun to part shade, so, en masse, it would definitely brighten those sometimes difficult spaces underneath a tree canopy.
Also great for a foundation planting - or as a hedge or a low screen. Zones 4-7, but it needs watering every week, and more in extreme heat.
Variegated Box-Leaf Azara
Azara microphylla 'Variegata'
This is not a plant I'm familiar with, likely because it's zone 8-10. However, looks like a great candidate for everyone south of zone 7.
It's an upright shrub or small tree with a fountain shape and arching branches. Delicate, small leaves are edged in white, and tiny, insignificant flowers in spring have a fragrance like vanilla. They turn into orange-red berries in summer. It's also evergreen and grows to a height of 15-25 feet and a width of 8 to 10 feet. Part shade to full sun, and needs weekly watering, more in extreme heat. Collected by Dan Hinkley.
I love the deodar cedar. Gorgeous.
