Here are a few more 2014 ASLA honor award winners.
Sky Garden, Miami Beach
Raymond Jungles Landscape Architecture
You'd never know from looking at the photos that this is a roof garden up in the sky -- a secret residence & garden atop a new car park and office building.
The "Slope Garden" -- the front yard -- has views to downtown Miami. There's also an entertainment area with dining table, bar, and pool.
Soil depths on the roof garden are just six inches, and the plant palette includes red trunk, sculptural Acacia trees from Africa as well as a number of native bromeliads and agaves, along with Virginia creeper, gulf cordgrass, gaillardias and seaside goldenrod.
Hill Country Prospect, Center Point, TX
Studio Outside Landscape Architecture
This family compound sits atop an eight-acre mesa, and the structures are sited to contrast with the natural grasses, wildflowers and native trees.
Wide lawns with native trees are placed next to native bluestem prairies, and these areas are retained by corten steel walls.
There are also pool and tennis pavilions, permeable grass parking areas, and lots of entertaining space.
The Awards Jury said that the "elegant weaving of meadows with the modernist lines of the architecture and the gorgeous stones that create paths and walls come together to create a truly inspiring space in the native prairie."
