Sunset is not kidding when they say this is the ultimate guide to drought-tolerant plants and gardens.
In the Sunset Western Garden Book of Easy-Care Plantings: The Ultimate Guide to Low-Water Beds, Borders, and Containers (Oxmoor House, 2015), the Sunset editors give you everything a designer could possibly want in a guide to gardens with low water requirements.
Even if you don't live in California or elsewhere in the West, you'll find this book very useful, no matter where you reside. As editor Kathleen Brenzel notes in the introduction, "Western gardens are reflecting the shapes and shades of the land, as gardeners make use of their property's natural advantages --its distant views, soils, exposure, climate -- and suit the garden to its setting."
The following chapters are divided into various categories -- gardens, beds and borders, succulents, groundcovers, containers, tips, etc -- and they contain scores of photos of garden vignettes, along with descriptions of the main design elements and the plants. You'll particularly appreciate the fact that each photo includes the name of the designer -- or in some cases, the garden where the photo was taken. There are also tips from pro designers, takeouts on particular plants, a list of "smart choice" shrubs, and much, much more. This is not a garden how-to book, but it's crammed with ideas and info that any creative gardener can easily put to use. A true winner.
