Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum has announced the winners of its 16th annual National Design Awards, and the top Director's Award went to designer and author Jack Lenor Larsen. Cooper Hewitt called him one of the "world's foremost advocates of traditional and contemporary crafts ... a dominant resource for signature fabrics ... that are synonyous with 20th century design at its finest."
Larsen has designed garden containers for Seibert and Rice, and this photo is of the Red Garden at his own Longhouse Reserve on Long Island. The garden is open to the public two days a week from late April to mid October or so, and it's open Wednesday through Saturday July and August. Well worth a visit to the 30-plus garden rooms and elements, including many artworks.
Coen and Partners of Minneapolis, founded by Shane Coen, won the Landscape Architecture Award. The firm was cited for its embrace of "the complexities of each site with quiet clarity and ecological integrity." The photo is of Wood House in Chicago, an urban infill project that beautifully integrates the house into the late 1800s neighborhood.
