Opening this Saturday, May 14: a major exhibition at the New York Botanical Garden explores the horticultural inspiration behind American Impressionism.
A garden reflecting the paintings of artists like Willliam Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam and John Singer Sargent is on display at the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. Old fashioned flowers are featured, many depicted in paintings of the gardens of Florence Griswold, Celia Thaxter, John Twachtman and other renowned gardeners of the time. Lining the walkways: tens of thousands of cornflowers, larkspur, holllyhocks, peonies, columbines, plus bulbs, annuals and other perennials. Morning glories top trellises, meadows are dotted with poppies, and there are tons of irises as well.
In the NYBG Library, there's an exhibit of more than 20 paintings and sculptures by Chase, Hassam, Sargent, and their contemporaries.
Special classes, lectures, and exhibits will accompany the show, which runs through September 11th.
