Some lovely new plants for 2017 from Monrovia -- just a few that I particularly like.
Burly Blue™ Juniper
(Juniperus scopulorum 'MonOvr')
Blue-grey conifers deserve a special place in the garden, and this one is particularly nice because -- yes! -- it's a groundcover. Just two feet high, it'll spread to six to eight feet wide, and once established, it needs only occasional watering.
So if you have a place for it in full sun, use it as an accent, at the front of the border, in the rock garden, or even for erosion control.
Hardy in zones 3-8.
Plum Passion® Vine Maple
(Acer circinatum 'MonCir')
A small tree, 10-15 feet tall and eight feet wide, with very noticeable red spring foliage and a graceful, somewhat horizontal habit. In winter, the bare branches take on a twisting form, so it's great for winter interest.
Takes part to full sun, with a more upright, airy form in sunny locations. Best used as a standout specimen, in the woodland garden, or for firescaping. It's also often used as an espalier. It's native to the Pacific Northwest and is hardy in zones 6-9.
Plumetastic™ Pink Muhly Grass
(Muhlenbergia capillaris 'Irvine')
There's nothing like pink muhly grass in fall ... you simply can't miss the hue and the form. This cultivar blooms a little later than others, with fabulous color well into fall. Use it in urban gardens, mass plantings, alongside the pool, in rock gardens and along the coast. And it's a native American plant.
It reaches a height of two to three feet, with bloom spikes up to about four feet. Birds like it, deer do not, and it's easy care and fast growing. The perfect grass for autumn in zones 7-10. It does well here in DC, too -- and we're zone six.
