If you've got the space and the money .... you could carve 10 acres of formal gardens out of the total 64 acre private estate in Frederick, MD, at the base of the Catoctin Mountains. But on this Garden Conservancy Tour, I wasn't sure what this garden is supposed to be.
High Glen Gardens is an ambitious project, still very much underway. If you look back the other way from the "English-style" manor house, off in the distance there are steps up through the lawn,
and a long view toward this fountain backed by an alleƩ -- described as a "grand alleƩ of bur oaks." The gardens have a number of separate garden "rooms," a woodland with rustic paths, many garden borders and specimen trees.
Enroute from the barn to the main residence, you pass through this formal rose garden, complete with little box hedges and a statue or two.
On the far side of the mansion, there are other garden areas, including this more or less Southwestern-themed garden, along with a separate structure and indoor seating areas and a kitchen.
And of course there's a bocce court ... and I'll spare you the Japanese Garden, the greenhouse, and the veg garden with formal statuary, and the huge expanse of open fields.
I can't think of an overall theme for this garden, but it does draw the visitors when it's open.
