Christmas Books III

I can't decide which of these two books I like better -- so maybe both would be welcome under the Christmas tree. Both are from British authors.

The Japanese Garden (Phaidon, 2017)

 Garden designer Sophie Walker emphases themes that explore major elements in Japanese design in this comprehensive survey of  92 gardens, from the ancient to the contemporary. She also includes essays by other artists, designers, and cultural experts.  A book you won't want to miss.  My full review is here. 

 

The Gardens of Japan (Frances Lincoln Ltd, 2017)

Author Helena Attlee takes you to many gardens in this book that are off the beaten tourist track, ones you might miss on a regular garden tour. 

Descriptions of each garden and stunning photos complete the tour ... a book you'll want to study carefully  before you embark on that trip to Japan.  My full review is here.

Gardening with Foliage First: 127 Dazzling Combinations that Pair the Beauty of Leaves with Flowers, Bark, Berries, and More (Timber Press, 2017)

Another terrific book from authors Karen Chapman and Christina Salwitz ... practical, crammed with important information to turn your designs into spectacular shows.  My full review is here.

Designing with Succulents (Timber Press, 2017)

This update to Debra Lee Baldwin's very popular first edition some years ago, you'll want to have this complete rewrite, including magnificent gardens owned by designers & others.  My full review of the book is here.

And to go along with Baldwin's book, you'll want to consider:

Prick by Gynelle Leon (Mitchell Beazley 2017)

The book profiles more than 80 cacti and succulents -- favorites of the author, who founded London's first shop dedicated to these plants.  There are descriptions and photos of each one, and in the back of the book, a care guide and design tips.  Succulents are zooming in popularity, so if you're intrigued, you'll want both of these books.

Garden Renovation: Transform Your Yard Into the Garden of Your Dreams (Timber Press, 2017)

Who better than Bobbie Schwartz, former president of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) to get you going and inspire you to update your garden.  Packed with advice, photos, plants, and much more.  My full review is here.

 

 

Christmas Gifts I

Butterfly Gingko Serving Bowl by designer Michael Aram

As the Huntington puts it, the Butterfly Ginkgo Collection celebrates the representation of flora as fauna.  The hand-crafted bowl is made from stainless steel, natural and oxidized brass and measures 9 x 12 x 6".  There's also a nut dish, picture frame, keepsake box, table lamp, vase and centerpiece in the collection.  Beautiful gifts for the gardener.

Revival Rose Vase

Click on the image for a larger view, and you'll see the copper stylized roses that adorn the vase.  It is made by Ephraim Pottery and inspired by Marblehead Pottery, a premier pottery shop in the 1920s and 30s. It's made from traditional earthenware with copper accents on a chestnut glaze.  A liner is recommended for use with water.  About 6-1/4 x 3-1/2"

 

Huntington Garden Ornaments

This collection depicts the Huntington's Japanese, Desert, and Rose Gardens -- all hand-painted on one-of-a-kind ornaments.  Glass ornaments, about three inches in diameter.

Gardens of the High Line: Elevating the Nature of Modern Landscapes (Timber Press, 2017)

It's an art museum, it's a community space, a botanical garden suspended above the streets, an escape from the city.  Focus:  Plantings by Piet Oudolf, with gorgeous photos by Rick Darke.  It's the story of the High Line as well.

Movement and Meaning: The Landscapes of Hoerr Schaudt (Monacelli Press, 2017)

Hoerr Schaudt is one of the premier landscape architecture firms in the country, and this book explores the Midwestern roots that give their designs exuberance, simplicity, and close attention to detail.

It's a lesson in design that no serious designer would want to miss.  My review is here.

Private Gardens of the Bay Area (Monacelli Press, 2017)

A survey of more than 35 gardens in the San Francisco Bay Area, this book covers it all -- city, country, traditional, modern, designers from Tommy Church and Lawrence Halprin to Topher Delaney and Bernard Trainor.

A classic on California gardens, although the authors say there's no such thing as a "California Garden."
