This residence in Austin, TX, won the top award for residential design in this year's ASLA professional awards.
The Word & Carr Design Group took advantage of a steep slope on a degraded lot of less than half an acre to install a landscape that focuses on native plants, hardscape, and details.
The clients wanted a low-maintenance landscape that would not use much water, so the designers decided to organize the space around a series garden "moments" in negative spaces created by the architecture. Invasive and non-native plants were removed, contained or pruned back; native grasses and succulents were introduced; and designers even worked with a grower to bring on a new Pennisetum hybrid called "Kick Ass Grass" that captures light and moves beautifully in the breeze.

The Awards Jury noted that the textures in the landscape are "wonderful...There are so many projects that try to do this and fail." This one, they said, "is very well done."
