Philadelphia Flower Show Preview 2019

Flowers and More Flowers: "Flower Power" is the name of this year's show.

Philadelphia Flower Show March 2-10

Flowers are part of our everyday lives and impart to us a wide array of emotions, from love and hope to peace, beauty, tranquility, and joy.  Sam Lemheney, the PHS Chief of Shows and Events, says this year's designers "will capture how flowers influence the way we feel, think and act in personal and global ways." The displays are expected to demonstrate how flowers convey emotions in a universal language that transcends borders and cultures. 

The show is hosting this year's FTD (Florists' Transworld Delivery) World Cup, an international design competition with competitors from more than 20 countries.  Their creations will be on display throughout the show.

The entrance garden features towering vine sculptures replete with flowers, plants, and butterflies; overhead, a meadow of wildflowers will float above the displays.  Several horticultural social media stars will also be in attendance:  Nick McCullough, of the blog "Thinking Outside the Boxwood," and who has more than three million followers on Pinterest, is designing one exhibit, and Tu Bloom of Chicago will be host at the Gardener's Studio.  Tu Bloom's past projects include the stage at the Grammy Awards, Michael Jackon's childhood home, and the Chicago Flower & Garden Show.

It promises to be a stunning show -- so don't miss it.

 

 

Orchids of Singapore: NY Botanical Garden

A sure sign of spring is the annual orchid show at the NY Botanical Garden -- this year is the 17th show, in collaboration with Singapore Botanic Gardens and Gardens by the Bay.  Singapore is home to one of the world's great orchid cultures and is a world leader in hybridizing orchids.  So the show promises to be one of the garden's most spectacular. 

Singapore Botanic Gardens is the only tropical garden in the world that's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Gardens by the Bay is known for its vertical displays of orchids, whose structures have photovoltaic cells that harvest solar energy.  How about that!

Thousands of orchids will be on display at the show, including many from the NYBG's collections.  This is surely a show you won't want to miss, and there are numerous special events that go along with it.

Happy Valentine's Day

And this rose is surely what the poet had in mind.

"Valentine's Day," new from Weeks Roses in 2006,
is a climbing mini-flora with canes 6-10 feet high, medium-size, deep red velvet blooms,  and very dark green leaves.

It's a repeat bloomer which flowers the first year on new and old wood.  Said to be ideal for fences, balconies (think Juliet) or trellises, and of course, valentines.

New Plants 2019 - II

First Editions® Lotty's Love™ Rose
(Rosa rugosa 'BOC rogosnif')

This new ever-blooming rugosa won a gold medal from the American Rose Society, most likely because it has huge clusters of semi-double deep pink blooms with golden stamens and a strong cinnamon aroma. It's cold hardy to Zone 3, tolerant to salt, and forms red rose hips in autumn.  Size is about 3,5 high and wide, and it takes full sun.

 

First Editions® Berry White™ Hydrangea
(Hydrangea paniculata 'Renba')

There can never be enough new Hyd paniculatas, and this is no exception. It has strong, upright stems and blooms, which emerge white in midsummer and then fade to deep pink.  The color of the flowers can vary according to zone, climate, and soil type.  But -- it flourishes in Zones 3-8, and grows six to seven feet high and four to five wide.  Sun to part sun.

 

First Editions® French Cabaret™ Red Hibiscus
(Hibiscus syriacus 'Mindoub1')

Grow this tree-form Rose of Sharon for its lovely flowers, with dark pink buds that open to a blush pink with shades of white.  It has large double blooms that provide a show from July to October.  Moreover, it's heat and drought tolerant and can be grown in alkaline soils.  Zones 5-8, five to eight feet high and four to seven feet wide.

 

First Editions® Flip Side™ Chastetree
(Vitex x 'Bailtexone')

You might late summer blooms are the main reason to grow chastetree, but this one is an exception because of its unusual foliage -- olive-green leaves that are purple on the underside, for a show even when the shrub is not in flower.  The deep purple flowers re-bloom and attract a number of pollinators.  It's hardy in Zones 7-9 and is more compact than other varieties, at 6-8 feet high and 8-10 feet wide.
