Small Garden GOLD Award
Central Park West Penthouse
Gunn Landscape Architecture
There's always something magical about roof gardens, and this one on NYC's Central Park West is particularly nice because it's a penthouse with two outdoor garden levels.
The lower terrace shown here includes cooking, lounging, and other places to congregate, while disguising mechanical features around the perimeter and installing a water feature that conceals the elevator shaft.
The pet-friendly green roof shown here is adjacent to the living room and vegetation between the pavers creates a connection with interior spaces. Plantings were selected to create four-season interest, including dogwood and eastern redbud trees, English and Boston ivies, clematis and climbing hydrangea.
The upper terrace is designed to take advantage of the dramatic views across the river, and ornamental grasses were planted to surround the terrace, which is subject to northwest winds in winter and full sun in the summertime.
Residential GOLD Award
Panoramic Haven, Oakland, CA
Nina Mullen of Mullen Designs
This property in the Oakland Hills has panoramic views of San Francisco, the bridges and the bay, and the owners, who were entering retirement, wanted to remove the extensive 2200 square foot lawn and replace it with water-wise plantings in a landscape designed for relaxation and entertainment.
Designer Nina Mullen worked with the existing pool, pool deck and dining patio and integrated new features into the landscape, including walkways to link several garden rooms and create easy movement throughout the site.
A patio with a fire table is the hub for the walkways, and drought-tolerant plantings with colorful flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies and complement the dramatic views.
