In her latest book, Gardentopia: Design Basics for Creating Beautiful Outdoor Spaces, (Countryman Press, 2019) designer Jan Johnsen offers one-page design principles on a variety of subjects from color to classic garden elements, plants, garden themes, artful accents and more.
In "A Window in the Garden," Johnsen explains that a window can be almost anything -- an opening in a wall of plants, a view through a garden gate or through two trees -- anything that frames a view -- a view that calls attention to something special in the landscape.
In "Food for the Nose," she suggests placing fragrant plants near a door or inside an enclosed space to take advantage of the scent.
"A Foliage Tapestry" advises following the path of nature itself -- combining groundcovers of diverse colors and textures and weaving them together to form a tapestry on the garden floor.
In all, Johnsen has profiled 135 garden tips -- each one accompanied by a brief explanatory text and absolutely gorgeous photos to illustrate each concept. And as she says in the introduction, "This book outlines the simple changes you can make that will turn your backyard into what I call a 'gardentopia,' an outdoor space of delight and serenity." It's a book that designers won't want to miss.
