New this year from Bailey Nurseries
First Editions® Tianshan® Seven-son flower
(Heptacodium miconioides 'Minhep')
Named after the mountain range in China where the species is native, this variety has a compact habit (yay!), only 8-12 feet high and 5-7 feet wide. It's a rounded, upright shrub or small tree with fragrant white flowers in late summer. The exfoliating bark is another nice attribute, especially in the winter season. Use as a specimen or an informal hedge. Zones 5-9, takes full sun to part shade.
First Editions® Autumn Inferno® Cotoneaster
(Cotoneaster 'Bronfire')
What makes this cotoneaster quite unusual is the small red berries that form along the stems in fall ... berries that stay on the plant until the birds come and take them away. Plus, it has spectacular autumn color. it has an upright, arching form with a height of 5-6 feet and a spread of 4-5 feet. Dark green leaves in spring and summer make it perfect to use as an informal hedge. Zones 5-7, takes full sun to part shade.
First Editions® Love Child® Sweetspire
(Itea virginica 'Bailteaone')
There's always room for another sweetspire, and this one is particularly nice because of its compact habit and heavy, sweet-scented blooms in May to June. It has bright green leaves in spring that turn a noticeable burgundy color in fall. Three to four feet high and wide, takes sun or shade and is deer resistant, too. Zones 6-9.
First Editions® Iceberg Alley® Sageleaf Willow
(Salix candida 'Jefberg')
Great plant to contrast with other shrubs, this native willow was discovered by the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador Botanical Garden. At just three to six feet high and wide with silvery leaves, in spring it has silver catkins with red stamens that can be cut an brought inside for early displays. Best in full sun and moist soils, zones 2-6.
