Some lovely new roses to try from David Austin USA:
'Tottering by Gently'
(Rosa 'Auscartoon')
A pale yellow single rose that produces constant blooms from early summer until frost. The flowers have a light musky scent with hints of orange, and the large, orange-red hips in fall last longer than usual. The shrub is medium sized, about four feet tall and wide, with a rounded, branching growth habit. Takes full sun or part shade, USDA zones 5-11.
The name comes from a British cartoon series by artist Annie Tempest which has appeared weekly in Country Life magazine.
'Emily Bronte'
(Rosa 'Ausearnshaw')
This new rose may seem rather delicate, but Austin senior rosarian Michael Marriott says 'Emily Bronte' is "an exceedingly robust rose," with good looks, a lovely fragrance, repeat flowering and disease resistance to boot.
The blooms are pale pink with tones of apricot and the smaller central petals are deep apricot and surround a central eye. Marriott says that "Gardeners who love color play will find that 'Emily Bronte' is brilliant for mixing with color palettes of all sorts, from soft blues and purples to strong pinks, oranges and reds....Most fun will be choosing partner plants with foliage and flower colors that play off the rose's apricot center."
The flower has a strong tea scent that fades to Old Rose with hints of citrus. The shrub is about four feet tall and 3.5 feet wide with green glossy leaves and an upright growth habit. Zones 5-11, takes full sun or part shade.
'The Mill on the Floss'
(Rosa 'Austulliver')
Named for the novel by George Eliot, this rose is a four foot high shrub that gets significantly taller in warmer climates. It has medium sized pink blooms that have a carmine-red edge on the outer side of the petals, and a medium-strong fruity fragrance. It's a repeat bloomer, summer until frost, and the blooms appear above the glossy green foliage, nodding on gently arching growth. Full sun or part shade, USDA zones 5-8.
