Flame Thrower® Redbud
Cercis canadensis 'NC2016-2'
This new redbud from Star Roses & Plants has been named the 2021 Plant of the Year at this year's Chelsea Flower Show in the UK. It's certainly a beauty.
It was bred by Dr. Denny Werner at North Carolina State University's JC Raulston Arboretum. It's bold colors -- oranges, burgundy-reds, yellows, and greens all on the same branch -- persist throughout the growing season. The reds and oranges are more noticeable in spring, the yellows and greens in summer. In the early spring, as usual with redbuds, there are clusters of pink blooms along the branches.
The tree grows to about 15-20 feet high and 15 feet wide, so it's very suitable for small yards. Use it as a focal point, or plant a few together for a fabulous display. It's hardy in US zones 5-9.
