Philadelphia Flower Show, June 11-19
This year's show will again be outdoors at FDR Park in South Philly because of covid. According to PHS Chief of Shows Sam Lemheney, this year's theme, 'In Full Bloom' aims "to build on the 'wow factor' of previous years and deliver a truly immersive, engaging, and highly unique experience for our visitors that will both thrill and inspire."
Among this year's garden exhibitors is renowned landscape architect Martha Schwartz. Schwartz has designed a giant flower sculpture made from -- yes -- mushrooms. The 1800 square foot display depicts the beauty of the mushroom, its ability to thrive in dark, damp conditions, and its use in providing the life-saving antibiotic, penicillin.
Last year's winning garden designer, landscape architect Wambui Ippolito, is back again with another spectacular display. It's a spiral design that includes floral displays and a reflection pool for peaceful contemplation.
Other top-notch designers include UK designer Ann-Marie Powell, Apiary Studio, David Rubin Land Collective, and Refugia Design.
As usual, the show offers a Food Bazaar, educational demonstrations, winners of competitive displays, and a KIds' Play Space for children and parents, along with a native butterflies exhibit. Rotating bands, DIY crafts, and many vendors complete the picture.
I'm just hoping that next year the Flower Show can return to its usual February date -- inside at the Philly Convention Center. We'll see.
