Columbus Day Rose

This rose is a little hard to find in the US, but well worth a try. It was bred by Alan Meilland in France in 1992, on the 500th anniversary of Columbus' landing in the Americas.

The hybrid tea rose Christophe Colomb® Var. Meironsse (or Christopher Columbus) is a shrub about three to four feet high with large blooms of various shades of orange.  There is only a slight mild fragrance, but the rose is a vigorous grower that re-blooms throughout the season.

If you can track this rose down, it would be a great addition to the fall garden, and it would make a great Columbus Day (October 12th) present.

Best in USDA Zones 7b and warmer. It requires spring freeze protection in colder areas.  Removing spent blooms encourages re-flowering, and in spring, old canes and deadwood should be removed, and crossing canes should be cut back.  In warmer regions, a little more pruning is best.

Christmas Gifts: Last-Minute

1) Give a membership to your favorite local botanical garden or arboretum... or to The Garden Conservancy or the American Horticultural Society.

2.

 Garden knife from AM Leonard.  Since I bought one of these some years ago, it's the only tool I need in the garden:  weeding, digging holes for bulbs, digging holes for small-ish plant installations.  And it's stainless steel, so no rusting ... and ... you can usually always find it because of the orange handle.  Don't be without it.

 

3.

Order an amaryllis (or orchid, or something else) from White Flower Farm , or  if. you're really late ordering online, pick one up at your local nursery.  A touch of spring in the coldest months always brings happiness to the recipient.

NOTE:  Most gardens across the country are now open, most with timed entry tickets required, but since the uptick in covid cases, check with your local gardens.   Many online classes are available, but the majority of in-person events have been cancelled for the remainder of the year. Let's hope that normal activities can resume some time in 2021. Check the website of your favorite garden for online classes and other events.
